The Poultry Science Association (PSA) is pleased to announce it has entered into a new publishing agreement with Elsevier, Inc. to publish its two scientific journals, beginning January 1, 2020. Concurrently, Poultry Science© and The Journal of Applied Poultry Research will both move to Gold Open Access (OA), with all future published articles and all archived articles to be immediately shared worldwide.
It provides the highest level of visibility for published works and facilitates increased citation and further dissemination of the information, all of which aligns with the vision of PSA to be the world’s most respected resource for poultry sciences. Also, expectations of the academic community and publishing trends are moving in the direction of free availability (no cost to the reader) of research findings, especially when funded by government entities.
The PSA Board of Directors recently approved changing its journals to an OA format and Elsevier presented the best overall proposal. Elsevier is well positioned to support PSA’s transition to OA and has considerable experience transitioning journals from subscription models to OA.
The initial term is from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2024, with subsequent 3-year renewals, if mutually agreed.
Yes, both journals will be OA, beginning with articles published after January 1, 2020.
This is a journal article for which the author has agreed to permit perpetual, unrestricted online access to the final, published version of the article to readers immediately upon publication.
Yes, beginning January 1, 2020, all PSA journal articles (including all past articles) will be freely available.
Yes, the article is freely shareable worldwide when it is first published online, but the author retains the copyright. The author also retains all rights to patents, trademarks or other intellectual property rights. The author will be able to use the Creative Commons license, which allows readers and other users to copy and distribute (parts of) the article. By default, articles will be published under the CC BY-NC-ND (non-commercial, no derivative) license, which protects authors by restricting reuse of the articles to non-commercial purposes and not permitting distribution of the article if it is changed or edited in any way. However, authors can also opt for the CC BY license if their funding body mandates it, which extends options for reuse of the article, including allowing for alterations and revisions to the article and reuse by commercial entities.
No, there is no page limit on OA articles.
No, the OA articles will only incur the appropriate OA Member/Non-Member fee.
Yes, PSA members will pay $1500 per article and non-members will pay $2000 per article. These fees are the same for both journals.
Yes, most authors will incur an increase in publishing charges, when comparing the average journal article “page charges” to the OA fee. However, PSA believes the additional benefits of OA will justify the extra cost, including such benefits as no page restrictions and no color charges. Additionally, authors are expected to realize the benefits of making their research findings more readily available, more citable and more applicable throughout the poultry industry.
No, all articles published in OA format will be charged at the appropriate Member or Non-Member OA fee.
As part of the digital Open Access movement and in order to minimize the cost of the OA publishing fee, the journals will move to an electronic-oriented model. No, with the move to Elsevier, PSA will be moving to Editorial Manager which is Elsevier’s preferred article management system. It operates very similarly to Manuscript Central.
The final cut-off date will be October 1st, 2019. Manuscripts submitted after the cut-off date will be published in 2020 as OA articles and will incur the OA fee, if accepted for publication. Manuscripts submitted before this date will still be published under the “page charge” model upon acceptance, regardless of publication date.
For the Poultry Science© journal, there will be no significant changes to the style or reference formatting of manuscripts; however, the Board has recently approved merging the sections of ‘Genetics and Genomics’ and ‘Molecular and Cellular Biology’ into a single new section of ‘Genetics and Molecular Biology’. For the Journal of Applied Poultry Research, authors will begin using the same references format as Poultry Science©, while the manuscript style and structure will remain the same. These changes will take effect for manuscripts submitted after October 1, 2019. There are no other material changes being considered at this time, though some of the design aspects of the journal covers and website are currently under review.
No, there are no editorial process changes anticipated in the peer-review process, though current improvements are being made to facilitate bringing journal articles to press more quickly.
