What the Program Offers

This is a company reimbursement program for 50% of the intern’s paid salary (remaining 50% is to be paid by the employer) with a maximum of $2,500 in paid contributions by the PSA Foundation. Payment is made in the form of a reimbursement at the conclusion of the internship, assuming all requirements by the sponsoring company/organization (employer) and the intern/student are completed. At this time company participation is limited to businesses based in the United States of America and Canada only.


Students who Qualify are…
  • PSA Student Members (Student Membership is Free)
  • Companies may choose to hire international students, but those individuals are responsible for their own travel accommodations and any necessary work authorizations and/or visas; this program’s reimbursement is only allocated for salary.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with a declared major in any area of life sciences.
  • Write a letter of application (details below) and provide a letter of support (from an advisor, instructor, or past employer with the perspectives of the applicant's qualifications).

Companies/Organizations Interested in Participating That…
Do NOT yet have an intern…
  • Must complete the Company Internship Registration Form
  • Then, post the internship position on the PSA Career Center (Internships are posted complimentary. Free listing code is emailed as part of the confirmation upon completion of the Company Internship Registration Form.)
  • Intern is to be chosen from pool of candidates who have applied to the position via the PSA Career Center.
  • Once an intern, who meets the student qualifications listed above, the student will then need to provide the following materials to the PSA Foundation (please send to Sam Shafer at sam.shafer@poultryscience.org).

• Student Introduction Letter outlining background, education, career goals, and particular interests as it pertains to the internship opportunity with the participating company/organization.
• Resume/CV

Have ALREADY HIRED an intern…
  1. Ensuring that the student meets the student qualifications listed above, the student will then need to provide the following materials to the PSA Foundation (please send to Sam Shafer at sam.shafer@poultryscience.org):

• Student Introduction Letter outlining background, education, career goals, and particular interests as it pertains to the internship opportunity with the participating company/organization.
• Resume/CV


Company/Organization (Employer) Requirements
  • Be be based in and have operations in either the United States of American OR Canada. Companies in other countries do not qualify at this time.
  • Have internship registered through the Company Internship Registration Form (regardless of whether or not the intern has been hired or not).
  • The sponsoring company/organization will provide the intern with all required safety and onboarding training to perform the specified work.
  • Ensure the student completes the requirements in order for the company to receive the salary reimbursement:

• Sends required materials to Sam Shafer at sam.shafer@poultryscience.org prior to the internship starting (the Student Introduction Letter and Resume/CV)

Complete and send a Final Report: Employer Perspective that will provide the PSA Foundation Board of Trustees details regarding:

• The internship experience.
• Key learnings obtained.
• Suggestions for improving the experience.


Students/Interns Interested in Participating who…
Do NOT yet have an internship…
  • Will need to apply for an internship registered within the program, it is then at the discretion of the employer to make hiring decisions.
Have ALREADY BEEN HIRED by a company…
  • Must have his/her employer register the internship through the Company Internship Registration Form. Students DO NOT fill out this form.
  • Complete all items listed under the Intern/Student Requirements section below.

Student (Intern) Requirements
  • Interns/Awardees will comply with all required safety and onboarding training mandated by the sponsoring company/organization as well as all other policies set forth by the company/organization. Repercussions for disobeying any of these policies and procedures is at the discretion of the sponsoring company/organization.
  • International students are welcome to apply but are responsible for their own travel accommodations and any necessary work authorizations and/or visas.
  • At the conclusion of the internship, the student must send a Final Report: Student Perspective to the PSA Foundation’s Board of Trustees detailing the following:

• The internship experience.
• Key learnings obtained.
• Suggestions for improving the experience.


Complete Funding Details
  • PSA contributions through this award are to represent 50% of the costs of sponsoring the internship; the remaining 50% is to be contributed by the sponsoring company/organization.
  • The PSA contributions will be allocated to the hourly compensation for internship with the sponsoring company/organization.
  • Compensation is set at a minimum of $10/hour with a maximum of $2500 total PSA contributions per awardee.
  • Compensation will not exceed 40 hours per week and will last for a duration of 8-12 weeks; exact duration determined by the sponsoring company/organization.
  • Funding for housing will be the responsibility of the student unless otherwise provided by the sponsoring company/organization.
  • Funds will be made payable to the sponsoring organization at the conclusion of the internship.

The History of this Program

The Andrew F. Giesen III Poultry Science Undergraduate Internship Program was inaugurated in 2014 with donations from Drew's family, friends and Novus International Inc., in memory of his contributions to the industry as a Past President and Fellow of the Poultry Science Association, Past President of the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS), and a career-long contributor to the poultry industry as an employee of Novus International Inc.
