Symposium: Measurement and effects of trypsin inhibitor in soybean meal

Chair: Gregory L. Engelke, Cornerstone Resources LLC

This symposium will focus on the knowledge around the ANF (Anti-nutritional Factor of Trypsin Inhibitor (TI). Recent work has allowed the development of a new assay for a quick and low cost means of measuring the presence of the active portion of this protein. Additionally, an overview of commercial processing will be discussed.

Informal Nutrition Symposium: The Nutrient Requirements of Poultry, 10th Revised Edition

Chair: Douglas R. Korver, University of Alberta

The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine has commissioned an update to the 1994 National Research Council “Nutrient Requirements of Poultry”. The committee is currently approaching completion of the report for external review, and it is expected that the review process will be completed in 2024. The Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting represents an important international gathering for many of the end users of the report, and we expect that interest in this symposium will be extremely high, given the long interval (30 years) since the previous edition. The symposium will focus on the charge given to the committee and will focus on the changes to recommendations and justifications where changes have not been made, rather than a table-by-table review of the specific recommendations or requirements. The symposium will close with a presentation of the research needs in the area of poultry nutritional requirements identified by the committee.

1:00 pm

Symposium: Omics based technology applications in poultry meat research

Chair: Byungwhi Kong, USDA-ARS

Moderator: Brian Bowker, USDA-ARS

This symposium will not only focus on how recent omics technologies can be used to gather, integrate, and interpret data produced by various methodologies in poultry research, but will also highlight how omics and bioinformatics have increased our understanding of poultry meat quality problems.

Symposium: Defining sustainability within the poultry industry

Chair: Katy J. Tarrant, California State University, Fresno

This symposium will focus on defining sustainability within the dynamic landscape of the poultry industry. In response to a recent survey conducted in June 2023, 61% of PSA member respondents expressed an interest in understanding a modern definition of sustainability. The symposium will explore this multifaceted concept, scrutinizing its implications at various junctures along the supply chain. Attendees will gain valuable insights into how sustainability reverberates through critical aspects such as energy consumption, emissions output, water quality, the interaction of sustainability and welfare, and will explore digital tools designed to enhance data capture, enabling more accurate assessments and informed decision-making. By converging experts, practitioners, and educators in this symposium, we aim to cultivate a nuanced and forward-thinking understanding of sustainability in poultry production.

8:00 am

Symposium: Taking the guesswork out of feed additive selection

Chair: Shelby M. Ramirez, dsm-firmenich, Animal Nutrition & Health

All feed additives are influenced by a variety of factors that modulate their utility. Factors may be broadly categorized as bird-, environment-, or feed-related. For example, feed additives that increase the digestibility of nutrients in the diet may be more effective when the same nutrients are undersupplied to the host. Similarly, additives that promote enteric health may be more noticeably effective when the birds have a subclinical, chronic gut pathology. Bird genetics and growth stage will also influence the effect of additives that aim to increase weight gain or reduce feed conversion ratio. Until recently, these myriad factors have been a focus for academic research but application under field conditions has often been impractical. Today, commercial poultry producers access a host of information from precision services and associated data that creates valuable feedback loops. Personalized feed additive selection and optimization is becoming a reality. This symposium will demonstrate insights generated from precision technologies and how these insights can further support the development and application of feed additives.

8:00 am

Symposium: Use of Hyperspectral tools in the poultry meat industry

Chairs: Shai Barbut, University of Guelph & Brian Bowker, USDA-ARS

This area has been developing over the past two decades and today there are already some successful applications in the field. However, there is much more to be done. This symposium will focus on past achievements, current applications, and future developments.
