Champaign, Ill., Jan 12, 2021 – The Poultry Science Association Foundation (PSA Foundation) Board of Trustees announced that the PSA Board of Directors has approved the founding of the James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award of the Poultry Science Association in honor of the distinguished service of Dr. Denton on the PSA Foundation Board of Trustees for more than 15 years.
Dr. Denton has served the PSA Foundation in a variety of roles including Trustee, or ex-officio member, Board Chairman and most recently as the inaugural Executive Director. During his tenure as Executive Director he organized and led the initial Capital Campaign in January 2015 with the aim of developing scientific leaders in subject matters areas, such as poultry genetics, health and nutrition, food safety and quality, and animal well-being. Through his tireless efforts the Foundation raised capital to fund more than 7 student fellowship, scholarship and internship programs, has secured funding from more than 10 corporate sponsors, and has been responsible for increasing the nest assets of the Foundation nearly 15-fold to more than $1.7 million.
In all his roles in the Foundation, Dr. Denton has been relentless in his efforts to provide financial resources to support the Foundation’s goals, but especially the funding for student initiatives. He has selflessly provided his time and extensive talents to advance the mission and vision of the Foundation to establish it as a key driving force in attracting and educating the next generation of poultry science professionals.
The James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award will consist of a monetary award of $2,500 and a commemorative plaque provided by the Foundation, presented at the Poultry Science Association annual meeting. The purpose of the award is to specifically recognize and focus on a pattern of significant, continuous, dedicated contributions by an individual to the success, well-being and advancement of the Poultry Science Association and/or the Foundation. Recipients of the James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award are long-time PSA members who have clearly and substantially given of themselves in the work of the Association and/or Foundation, having significantly furthered the purpose for which it was founded.
The PSA Foundation will launch a funding campaign to raise sufficient capital to provide for the annual award of $2,500. About the Capital Campaign and the PSA Foundation
The Capital Campaign was launched by the PSA Foundation in January 2015 and aims to develop scientific leaders in subject matter areas, such as poultry genetics, health and nutrition, and food safety and quality, for the poultry enterprise and allied industry. Funds of the Capital Campaign are used to award undergraduate internships, undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, travel grants and preceptor/mentoring grants.
The PSA Foundation is a charitable corporation affiliated with the Poultry Science Association with the primary purpose of advancing the founding principles of PSA.
